Basset Houd Walkers Burnham

We last walked here in 2020, with some 30 hounds. If you want to refresh your memory just click here>

The walk
This flat stroll remains the most popular walk we do. Just along the river bank to the sea, then a mad chase along the sands to the wooden lighthouse and back. The sands stretch from the mouth of the Brue at Burnham past Berrow golf course up to Brean Down and Weston super Mare - but we stop at the wooden lighthouse shown on the right. The way back leads past a hound friendly open chip shop by the pier - and ignoring New Year resolutions some find it impossible to walk past.

Meet (10.30) at the Apex Leisure Park which is 2 miles off Junction 22 of the M5. See map below.

To find the start, leave J22 and immediately you are onto the large Edithmead roundabout. Turn left (south) onto the A38 and follow the wide dead straight road for half a mile, over the next roundabout - still on the A38 - and after crossing the railway bridge turn right round a small roundabout to "Burnham on Sea and Holiday Village", B3139, Burnham Road. After another half mile turn left immediately past the Esso garage (photo below) into Marine Drive. Apex Park entrance is 200yds further on the left (see photo below).
(For SatNavers the Esso garage is TA9 3EJ: don't say you aren't well looked after).

Below, the Esso garage: turn left just PAST here to Marine Drive.

The walk is beside the river to the sea wall when we then gambol along the sands - avoiding the sunbathers and whelk stalls - till we reach the odd and quaint wooden lighthouse (see right above). We can then wander as far as we like. One thing is certain: Berrow beach will be full of plenty of other dogs - it is an ever popular exercise area for dog lovers. At the time of foot and mouth when all footpaths were allegedly closed, it was about the only place we could give our hounds a decent run.
Please be aware that you should keep away from the tide edge - treacherous mud traps.

Chip shop

The obligatory halt at the chip shop. (Some can't wait to get to the lighthouse: the keen ones do it on the way back.)
