Meet 10:30 at Woodbury Castle car park (Grid SY 033 873)
Exit the M5 at Junction 30 Exeter Services. Take the exit signposted Exmouth and Sidmouth. Go straight across the roundabout at Clyst St Mary on the A3052 to Sidmouth.
Follow this road for approx 4 miles. Along the way you will pass West Point Showground, the Cat & Fiddle pub and Crealy Park. Following a long gradual climb you will reach the Half Way House Inn on your left. Immediately after take the right turn (B3180)for Exmouth, Budleigh Salterton and Woodbury Park Golf Course. After approx 2 miles you will reach Woodbury Castle, the highest and most prominent wooded feature in the area.
Drive around an S bend within the Castle and the car parks will appear quite quickly. We suggest you use that on the left by the wood itself. (see right)
Should this be full, use the car park across the road on the right which overlooks the Exe Estuary. Drive with a little care for, at the time of writing, there are a number of rather large pot holes.
The walk itself will take us around the rolling northern half of the pebble-bedded heath-land of Woodbury Common. The approx 5 mile route, all off road, comprises of wide bridleways mixed with interesting wooded areas. One can enjoy expansive views right the way across toward the Jurassic Coast. There are a number of gradients, mostly gentle in nature and water stops for the hounds. Worth noting that there are long stretches of dry terrain, so, as always, bring bottles as back up. For those with young hounds, you will be able to easily cut short the distance and still allow ample socialisation and fun.
We look forward to meeting up with you all soon.
